Obviously I’m partial to a particular subject matter, but all of Mike Kaluta’s art is super pretty. His sketchwork is especially fascinating. Something in the way he makes his figures fluid and awkward at the same time, sort of like stage actors do when they’re being creepy. His anatomy clearly views people as grown things, closer cousins to trees than action figures. His women petite and mischievous, his men lithe and a little dim — unless they’re just altogether Other, like the Shadow — and all of it made out of mystery and smoke, or maybe some dime store brand of incense. Looking through his works this morning, I think I see where a mid-90’s Guy Davis was getting his mojo:

Guy Davis, Sandman Mystery Theatre number something.
